What are solanaceous plants, are they suitable for human consumption?


In fact, according to holistic nutritionist Lee Holmes, solanaceae are known to be inflammatory foods, which would explain why many athletes avoid them in their diet.

What are these foods?

Specifically, solanaceae are a family of dicotyledonous plants belonging to the order Solanales, whose name comes from the genus Solanum.

They include tomatoes, peppers, paprika, cayenne pepper, potatoes, eggplant….

Why do people avoid them?

Some people avoid this food group because of an ingredient called solanine. “Sometimes people can have reactions to[solanine],” explains Holmes. “So if you have an allergy to solanine, it is best to avoid them. ”

Solanaceae also contain lectins, which are difficult to digest and can lead to a host of health complications, including food allergies.

“Lectins are not digested by the body and many people report cases of intestinal incontinence, or deficiencies in the intestinal mucosa increase permeability and over time lead to food allergies and autoimmune diseases,” explains sports nutritionist Marie Spano.

Lectins are actually a common compound in many plants, including cereals and seeds. Some, such as the type you will see in raw beans, are toxic and should not be eaten by humans.

But there is really not enough evidence to say that all lectins are harmful. In addition, by soaking the beans in water for a while or cooking them at a high temperature, the biological effects of lectins are deactivated, making them harmless.
